WednesdayWSP Town meeting LONG BEACH – The Washington State Patrol (WSP) will hold a town meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chautaugua Lodge at 304 N. 14th Street. Captain Gail Otto, WSP District 8 Commander will host the meeting. Guests will be WSP Chief Ronal Serpas, Deputy Chief Lowell Porter, and Pacific County Sheriff John Didion. The WSP is hosting town meetings around the state, explaining the challenges and successes of the patrol and giving the community an opportunity to express concerns. At the Long Beach meeting, the Rod Run and the David Carter case will be some of the topics discussed. Stuffed animals needed PACIFIC COUNTY – The Washington Pacific County Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. is sponsoring the ninth annual Care Bear Program stuffed animal drive running through Nov. 17. The Care Bear Program provides patrol cars and hospitals with stuffed animals to be given to children who are victims of traffic accidents, domestic violence, and the like. Drop off sites for stuffed animals include the New Life Church in Ilwaco, the Fish Trap Tavern in Chinook, Leather Unlimited in Long Beach, and Chester Tavern in South Bend. Crazy Crafts OCEAN PARK – Ocean Park Timberland Library presents Crazy Crafts from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 13 for school age children. Join librarian Susan Carney for after-school crafts; all materials provided. Gateway friends ILWACO – Friends of the Columbia River Gateway, supporting the Long Beach Peninsula area state parks invite the public to attend its monthly meeting, Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m. Meetings are held in the administration building at Fort Canby State Park. Shoalwater birders OCEAN PARK – The next meeting of the Shoalwater Birders is Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Ocean Park Library. Special guests at the meeting will be Clair and Beverly Klock. They are currently living on a small farm in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and have been involved in environmental education for the past 30 years. Their main program will focus on birds of the Columbia and Snake rivers, but will include pictures from the Antarctic, Baja and Alaska. Art on display LONG BEACH – Members of the Peninsula Arts Association are displaying their work at area businesses during the month of November, with pieces by Barbara Martin at the Chinook Observer and Elizabeth Bonn at The Ark. The drawings and paintings of Ilwaco High School art students continue to brighten up the walls of the Ilwaco Timberland Library during this month. The public is invited to stop by these businesses to view the work of these talented artists. Student art show ILWACO – Ilwaco High School students of art instructor Brigid Stucki are exhibiting their artwork at Ilwaco Timberland Library during November. The library is very proud to display the art done by these students from the junior high and high school levels, and encourages the public to stop in to view the work of these talented young people. Native artists show LONGVIEW – The contemporary work of 12 prominent Northwest Native artists will be on display in the Art Gallery, located in Main 115 at Lower Columbia College in Longview through Nov. 27. The gallery is open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; it is closed on Fridays. The display will include prints, masks, sculpture, clay, baskets, carved wood and ivory, ceramic, cast bronze, cedar bark clothing, dolls, and much more. Understanding benefits LONG BEACH – “Understanding Your Benefits” is a public forum sponsored by Willapa Counseling Center Friday, Nov. 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., in the meeting room of the Center at 1101 Pacific Avenue North, Long Beach. Issues related to employment and its impact on benefits will be discussed at this open forum. Emi Clark from the Social Security Administration and Shelba Marracci from Department of Social and Health Services will be the presenters. Interested participants might include social security consumers, healthcare providers, foster parents, social workers, family members, and friends. A question and answer period will provide ample time to answer questions about benefits, employment and disability, including recent and upcoming program changes. SaturdayDinner/auction benefit OCEAN PARK – The ReachOut Food Bank will be holding a benefit dinner and auction on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ocean Park Eagles Aerie No. 3602. Interested musicians, readers and vocalists should call 642-2288.Heartsparkle Players SEAVIEW – On Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. stage lights in the open-beamed ceiling of the living room in Seaview’s historic Sou’wester Lodge will once again beam down on performers of the Heartsparkle Players. Like life itself, the performance may be a mixture of humor and poignancy. This unusual theater company uses the “playback” dramatic technique developed by Jonathan Fox and “The Original Play Back Company” in New York. Audience members do not simply watch a playback theater performance. They are invited to tell stories from their experience, and then watch them performed with music, movement and dialogue. Everyone is welcome at this performance. Admission is by voluntary donation to charity. No one is ever excluded because of a lack of funds. Chowder contest SEASIDE – The 8th Annual Seaside Chowder Cook Off, presented by Boyd Coffee Company, will challenge chowder fanatics again this fall. Professional chefs will show off their best chowder recipes as they compete for cash awards and bragging rights. The Seaside Chowder Cook Off will take place Saturday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Seaside Convention Center. Each booth will offer clam chowder samples in either a New England or Manhattan style variety, or seafood chowder samples. The event is open to the public; admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for children ages 3-12. The cook off is a charitable event with proceeds benefiting Loaves and Fishes and Women’s Resource Center of Clatsop County. Participants this year include chefs from the following restaurants: The Shoalwater Restaurant at the Shelburne Inn in Seaview; Norma’s Ocean Diner in Seaside; Gunderson’s Cannery Cafe in Astoria; The Wayfarer Restaurant at the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach; Moby Dick’s Seafood and Spirits in Newport; Baked Alaska in Astoria. In addition, some of the region’s most accomplished jazz and Latin jazz musicians, including the Mary Kadderly Group, the Bobby Torres Ensemble and Park Avenue, will perform throughout the day. Attendees will also have a chance to win door prizes. The Cook Off will also feature a children’s activity center. For the adults, Willamette Valley Vineyards will be sampling its full line of fine wines and Pacific Rim Brewing, Inc., will sample their tasty microbrews. SundayBook release CHINOOK – A book release party for John Kulm’s new poetry book, “The Five Stages of Quitting Farming” will be held at The Sanctuary Restaurant on Sunday, Nov. 17 beginning at 1 p.m. The event will include a farm breakfast and a poetry performance by the author. For additional information, call 777-8380.Spaghetti feed PACIFIC COUNTY – The Washington Pacific County Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. will hold their annual chapter spaghetti feed on Nov. 17 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Chester Tavern in South Bend to raise money for the Care Bear Program. The cost of the spaghetti feed is $5 per person. The Care Bear Program provides patrol cars and hospitals with stuffed animals to be given to children who are in the hospital, in traffic accidents, domestic violence, etc. Razor clam demo ASTORIA – On Sunday, Nov. 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Matt Hunter, the North Coast shellfish biologist for Oregon will talk about everything you never knew about razor clams, answer all of your questions, and show his method for cleaning them. Chef Eric Jenkins will prepare three recipes using razor clams and have recipes and tasting at the end of the class for everyone. The class will be held at the Duncan Law Seafood Consumer Center on Marine Drive in Astoria. The cost is $15 per person, pre-registration is required. For more information, call 338-6523.Harvest music festival GRAYS RIVER – Two Sunday afternoon concerts, each starting at 3 p.m. will be held on Nov. 17 and Nov. 24 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Grays River Methodist Church building. Light refreshments at the church will follow each concert. The 100-seat Grays River church sanctuary is known for its superb acoustics. The Nov. 17 program includes kantele music by May Adair, Wilho Saari, and Karen Nelson; vocal solos by Mary Haase and Diane Matthews; and the Ocean Park United Methodist Church choir led by D.J. Bogue. Also performing will be the Rev. Michael Graef of Vancouver. The Nov. 24 program features the sixteen-voice Lyrica ladies choral ensemble of Puget Sound, the Skamokawa United Methodist Church choir, and local musicians Joel and Noreen Fitts on guitar and piano. Feed the Hungry LONG BEACH – Crafters are needed for the second annual Help Feed the Hungry Holiday Bazaar to benefit the Peninsula F.I.S.H. Food Band in Ilwaco. Watch for more information to come.’Nutcracker’ tickets ASTORIA – Tickets to Little Ballet Theater’s full production of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” are on sale at Dugan’s Hardware, 1665 E. Harbor, Warrenton. Ballet performances are Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m. in the Astoria High School Auditorium. Tickets will also be available at the door.
