| Naselle secures third straight state trip, whips Wildcats 39-6
By KEVIN HEIMBIGNER Observer staff writer
NASELLE - Needing a win to be in the state playoffs for the third straight season, Naselle scored three quick touchdowns in the first period and raced to a 39-6 halftime lead that proved to be the final score over Ocosta there Thursday. The victory secures second place at 5-1 in the Pacific 2B League for the Comets behind Valley and they finish the regular season with a sparkling 9-1 record.
After allowing the only first down of the first three periods for the Wildcats, Naselle's defense forced a punt on the opening possession. Two plays later Nathan Carlson broke free for a 51 yard touchdown gallop and Austin Burkhalter ran in the two-point conversion.
Following a three-and-out the Comets again quickly scored on Burkhalter's eight yard run and Leonel Mendoza's kick for point after. With 30 seconds on the clock Naselle confirmed their reservation in the state playoffs when Scrabeck intercepted a pass and raced 27 yards for yet another first-quarter TD. Burkhalter found Marcos Herrera in the end zone for two points and the score stood 23-0.
Not to be denied Wildcat Darius Deshazier took the ensuing kickoff 68 yards for Ocosta's only score of the night. In the second period Scrabeck rambled in from eight yards out and added two points on the conversion and Alan Erickson scored on a one-yard plunge and Burkhalter's scamper added two more points to give Naselle a 39-6 lead with 5:40 remaining before intermission.
Again it was the stellar line play of sophomores Nick Zimmerman, Ryley Queener, Robert Eaton, Seth Scrabeck, Jesse Lopez, and Jesse Kimball and senior Manny Lopez both offensively and defensively that gave the Comets the commanding first-half lead.
In the second half Mendoza took over for Burkhalter at quarterback and in the fourth period freshman Dustin Eaton was the signal caller as Naselle substituted liberally after pop corn time. Six Comets tackled Wildcat runners for a combined 10 losses of the 36 running plays the home team tried. Robert Eaton had three, Carlson and Lopez two and Kai Leach, Ian Fauver and Jacob Condon each had tackles for losses or sacks.
Erickson and Robert Eaton each had nine tackles and Eaton, Jesus Martinez, and Chase Chapman recovered fumbles for the Comets to go along with two Scrabeck interceptions. Assistant Matt Scrabeck related, "This was another team effort. Every kid played and everyone contributed. I'm excited about our chances in the playoffs because these kids play hard, they listen and they learn and they play together."
Naselle dominated the game statistically, allowing Ocosta, who finishes 3-3 in league play and 6-4 overall, only 78 yards of total offense. Three Wildcats combined to go 0-6 passing with a pair of interceptions and they ran 42 plays to 59 for the Comets. Naselle forced three punts and hasn't punted themselves in the last four contests. Ocosta turned the football over five times while the Comets lost the pig skin on three occasions.
Offensively Logan Scrabeck picked up 116 yards on 13 carries and Carlson also gained 116 yards on 12 rushes as 10 different Comets ran the football, all with success. Burkhalter completed one pass to Herrera for 20 yards and Dustin Eaton one to John Hines for one yard. Naselle amassed 327 total yards and 15 first downs to but six for the Wildcats.
"Great job tonight everyone," Coach Jeff Eaton praised following the victory. "Now you have made the playoffs for sure. Friday you can have a day off, but Monday we're in pads and getting ready for Tacoma Baptist." Naselle will visit Curtis High School southwest of Tacoma at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 for the first round of the 2009 state playoffs against the fourth-ranked and 10-0 Crusaders on their home field.
In other Pacific action Valley sewed up the league title with a 64-40 slugfest win at Raymond and South Bend shut out battered North Beach 45-0. The Indians will face Mossyrock, a 22-12 winner over Wahkiakum in a winner-to-state battle Tuesday.
